March 2017 Newsletter Vol. 2 Issue 7

Chairlady's Note

大家好嗎! Hello Everyone!

Happy Spring!

As we get underway with our spring cleaning for the Flea Market on March 11th, I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to have purged my drawers and closets. I now have a place to store new treasures! Last week, I unloaded a few bags of trash from my children's rooms and found plenty of items to donate to IWAT for our Flea Market booth at Morrison. Have you found any gems?

As for the Spring Fling Charity Event on May 6th, IWAT is also looking for donations from friends and businesses for a silent auction. These donations of money or items for the auction will be instrumental in raising money for charity! If you, your business, or someone you know would like to donate, please contact Jing. AND we will be able to issue receipts for tax purposes this year! Yay!!!

Finally, it is time to begin planning for the 2017-2018 IWAT season. As you know, members' time and talents are what keeps IWAT a vibrant community of friendship and charity. On a personal note, IWAT has been a great place to develop myself-an internship of sorts-that allowed me to learn organizational and social skills necessary for future projects. Have you considered sharing your skills or learning new ones? Do you have ideas to keep us fresh, current, and continually improving? Help guide and direct our organization. Consider a board position for next year!

With much love,

Rebecca MacNeal

2017 April: Island of a Thousand Mirrors

by Nayomi Munaweera

Island of a Thousand Mirrors follows the fate of two families, one Tamil, one Sinhala as they straddle opposite sides of the long and brutal Sri Lankan civil war. Narrated by the eldest daughter of each family, the story explores how each woman negotiates war, migration, love, exile, and belonging. At its root, it s a story of a fragmented nation struggling to find its way to a new beginning.

2017 May: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

by Lisa See

In nineteenth-century China, in a remote Hunan county, a girl named Lily, at the tender age of seven, is paired with a laotong, “old same,” in an emotional match that will last a lifetime. The laotong, Snow Flower, introduces herself by sending Lily a silk fan on which she’s painted a poem in nu shu, a unique language that Chinese women created in order to communicate in secret, away from the influence of men.
