A Word from our President

Hello Everyone,
We are in the holiday season now! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Many of us may now be decorating the Christmas tree while wearing a T-shirt and short pants. That is one of the different experiences of celebrating the festive holidays in tropical Taiwan. We are able to enjoy the most comfortable season of the year, no more heat wave and humidity!
At November’s luncheon, we had a large group of members who came to join us. People were catching up with old friends, also getting to know the new friends. It was a beautiful scene. We had a wonderful crochet workshop as well. Thanks to Ines who shared her talent and Aline who provided her place. Some members have also been enjoying our small outdoor biking group and book club. Everyone is welcome to check it out. IWAT provides all kind of activities to fit your needs. If you are interested in leading one of our small groups, please let us know! We love to have people sharing their interests and talents.
December 2nd is the date of our annual Christmas party, the tickets are almost sold out! Toni, Jing, and their committee, who all have tremendous team spirit, have worked very hard on planning this great event. Everyone is so excited and looking forward to join in the fun they have prepared.
Finally, we have stepped fully into the “E” generation, using different social media to help us to connect to one another. I love hearing how members discuss the different ways of using them properly.
IWAT ladies come from different cultures and backgrounds, and the most lovely of part is that we are all willing to learn from each other, understand our differences, and use those differences to build an even stronger IWAT. We are able to do this because we have genuine love for each other and IWAT. Most importantly, we “Give” and we “Thank,” and that makes IWAT a singular and beautiful place to be.
Towards to the end of 2017, let us continue to cherish each other and count our graces. Wishing you all a warm Thanksgiving season and a very merry Christmas! See you all at IWAT’s activities and Christmas party! Enjoy your holidays and safe traveling!

BOOK CLUB NOTES
December Book Club Selection:
Green Island
by Shawna Ryan
Taipei, February 28, 1947: As an uprising rocks Taiwan, a young doctor is taken from his newborn daughter by Chinese Nationalists, on charges of speaking out against the government. Although he eventually returns to his family, his arrival is marked by alienation from his loved ones and paranoia among his community. Years later, this troubled past follows his youngest daughter to America, where, as a mother and a wife, she too is forced to decide between what is right and what might save her family—the same choice she witnessed her father make many years before. A stunningly lyrical story of a family and a nation grappling with the nuances of complicity and survival, Green Island raises the question: how far would you go for the ones you love?
January Book Club Selection:
Carry On Warrior: The Power of Embracing Your Messy, Beautiful Life
by Glennon Doyle Melton
A hilarious and poignant reflection on our universal (yet often secret) experiences have inspired a social movement by reminding women that they’re not alone. Glennon's writing invites us to believe in ourselves, to be brave and kind, to let go of the idea of perfection, and to stop making motherhood, marriage, and friendship harder by pretending they’re not hard. In this one woman’s trying to love herself and others, readers will find a wise and witty friend who shows that we can build better lives in our hearts, homes, and communities.
